The Shrimp farming industry is growing over the years especially the type of it that involves raising shrimp under controlled conditions instead of harvesting them from the open ocean. There are two different types of shrimp farms namely; a standard shrimp farm project using a one-phase and two-phase approach. In the two-phase type of farming, juvenile shrimp is stocked in nursery ponds from hatcheries and after several weeks, they are transferred to grow out ponds. And as regards one-phase, there is the elimination of the nursery ponds and the shrimp are directly stocked into grow out ponds and this happens after they have spent short periods in adaptation tanks. Two crops of shrimp are produced by farms a year but some farms can harvest three crops a year especially those located within 10 degrees of the equator.
The different types of shrimp farms have the potential of producing abundant shrimp as long as you maintain the standard requirements of the farm. And it is this success of shrimp farming that is now presenting a threat to marine environments. For instance, the Mesoamerican Reef in Belize has been damaged by shrimp farms. But projects have been launched by concerned people in response that are designed to observe as well as control shrimp farming. This has in turn encouraged more sustainable practices.
Another response has been to practice indoor fish farming where shrimp farming projects are built so that they are able to be friendly environmentally as well as sustainable. The ponds are each stocked with shrimp and each pond has shrimp at specific stages of development. Pollution from these facilities is very minimal as waste is reduced by water recycling. Shrimp are known to be disease resistant. Shrimp farming enables one to deliver shrimps that are fresh at the same cost. Many people are now using the different kinds of shrimp farms hence confirming the fact that shrimp farming is growing at a very fast rate.
